But winter comes early in these parts. I arrived on October 31st and awoke to the picturesque hills of rural western Pennsylvania blanketed in snow. But that coating didn’t last long and with a few minor adjustments, I was able to experience all this lovely destination has to offer as an autumn destination.

When planning your getaway, check the Pennsylvania Fall Foliage Report to make the most of the season. Also, check the Lawrence County Events Calendar to find out what’s happening during your visit.

The revitalization efforts have also brought in small shops and businesses allowing visitors to shop for local goods and enjoy the town’s relaxed pace. You will also find many dining options, from classic diners to modern eateries, offering a taste of the region’s diverse culinary influences.
Explore the Amish Countryside
Over 2300 Old Order Amish residents call the countryside of New Wilmington and neighboring Volant “Home.” These two hamlets make up the second-largest Old Order Amish community in Pennsylvania. Austere Amish dwellings, schools, churches, and businesses dot the landscape. As you drive along the rural roadways, brown buggies unique to Lawrence County are a common sight.

This unique bikeway meanders through pastoral countryside, and past haunting ghost forests, offering stunning views of the Mahoning River and tons of opportunities for photos. If you ride the trail in October, you will likely see some spooky Halloween displays along the way.

In 2003 this well-maintained trail was designated a National Recreational Trail, “a designation given to existing trails that contribute to the recreational and conservation goals of a national network of trails.”
Moraine State Park’s North Shore
Spanning over 16,725 acres in Butler County, Moraine State Park takes its name from the geologically significant moraines—accumulations of earth and stones left by retreating glaciers. With Lake Arthur, a 3,225-acre lake, as its center, the park offers a peaceful retreat for outdoor enthusiasts. Take a Stroll along the Ewing Park Nature Trail
Located in Ellwood City, the Ewing Park Nature Trail (Parking and trailheads at the corner of Joffre St. and Jefferson Ave and Riverside Drive, Ellwood City, PA) offers a lovely 2-mile paved pathway with an elevation gain of about 173.8 ft. This easy trail popular among joggers, walkers, and dog owners follows the Connoquenessing Creek. Strategically placed covered benches provide opportunities to pause, relax, and enjoy the peaceful sounds of rushing water amidst the serene and scenic surroundings.

If you prefer a bit more rugged terrain you can find that as well in Ewing Park. I admit that I came across the dirt trails by accident and ended up on a delightful detour. But if you park at the Riverside Drive trailhead and rather than heading on to the paved nature path you walk in the opposite direction you will see a set of steps. These will take you to a dirt path that leads you deeper into the woods.

Indulge in Donuts “as big as your head” at Anna’s Baked Goods and Donuts
An Old Order Amish woman, Anna runs a little bake shop from an outbuilding on the family property. During my visit to the area, I kept hearing about her donuts and was told “They’re as big as your head. I thought this was something I must see.
That Saturday morning when I walked into her shop, bright sunlight pierced a haze-filled kitchen, and the sweet scent of warm pastries teased my senses. Trays of donuts and Whoopie Pies were strewn across tables. Baking equipment and racks positioned willy-nilly.

The donuts come out of the oven as round puffs and each one is filled to order. Anna offers 10 varieties of filling including seasonal fruit jellies, lemon, chocolate, and cream. Whoopie pies are handled the same way. You can have her slice the dark chocolate cake and layer the filling between the two halves or have the cream spread between two “pies.”
In addition to donuts and Whoopie Pies, Anna offers cookies, bread, sticky buns, and more. Her shelves are stocked with local honey, Amish canned goods, and other traditional Amish delights.
But Anna’s Bake Goods and Donuts (642 Wilson Mill Rd. New Castle, PA) has limited hours. Only open Friday & Saturday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. Anna is a Cash-only business.
Participate in the Annual Tour de Donut and Donut Dash

Beginning and ending at Westminster College, riders can indulge in drinks, snacks, and donuts at designated stops along the routes.
